New College Durham Design Competition

NCD1

Following on from a visit to the Roots & Wings studio at the end of last year, we were invited by course leader Stuart Drummond to work with second year Graphics students at New College Durham on a two day mini-project. Students were split into six teams and given the brief: to identify a social or environmental issue in the community of Framwellgate Moor and then use their skills to propose a creative solution. At the end of the second day the students pitched their ideas to three bigwigs: a local councillor, an ex-head teacher and the New College Durham’s Community Learning Co-ordinator. The winning team have been invited to work with us for a day on branding and marketing for a forthcoming project. It was a super enjoyable process working with the students, who showed great skill and maturity in tackling the brief and came up with a diverse range of solutions to a variety of issues, included littering, obesity and a lack of meaningful interaction between the college and the community. We would like to thank all the students involved for their enthusiasm in the face of a difficult brief, and we look forward to working with the winning students again in the near future!
