Christmas Truces Resource Pack
Roots and Wings was commissioned by the Martin Luther King Peace Committee to produce a resource pack that helps teachers engage pupils (Key Stages 2,3 & 4) with the centenary of World War 1 by focusing on one of the most extraordinary events of the Great War…the December 1914 Christmas Truces. We worked with political geography lecturer Dr. Nick Megoran from Newcastle University and Northumbria University chaplain Andii Bowsher to produce the resource pack, which is free to download from the MLKPC website, and is full of ideas for lesson plans across a range of subjects, as well as for assemblies based around the truces. The 1914 Christmas Truces offered a hopeful moment of recognition of the soldiers’ common humanity in the midst of some of the darkest days of the twentieth century. We hope that the resource pack will inspire young people to see that the commemorations can be used to promote messages of peace rather than nationalistic agendas; a sentiment that remains as important nowadays as ever.
The teaching packs have since been downloaded over 30,000 times by teachers all over the UK and further afield receiving 5-star reviews, as well as being featured in the TES NQT Newsletter.
