Working with Equal Arts, Roots and Wings ran a series of singing / song-writing workshops in Shadon House, a care home for people with dementia. The project was intergenerational; children from a local primary school were invited to visit Shadon House to work with the elderly people to write a song entitled ‘Now and Then’. During gardening sessions with the group, we created a stop-frame animation using photography and recorded a soundscape. The finished animation / soundscape was presented at a garden fete, designed to bring the local community into the care home. As well as engaging the care home residents with these activities, the project intended to break down some of the taboos surrounding dementia by opening the doors of the care home to the younger community, allowing them to interact with the service users, raising their awareness of dementia as a syndrome.
