RESEARCH.
We work with academics And institutions to turn research into engagement gold DUST!
We’re well-practiced in transforming academic research, taking it beyond the university to create impact in the ‘real world’.
We’ve collaborated with researchers to create campaigns, games, infographics, websites, physical exhibitions, digital content, and apps to drive engagement in a research area or topic. To achieve this we work alongside universities, science festivals, museums, heritage sites, and galleries.

Working with us:
Research is most effective when it is co-produced with stakeholders who are affected by the issue at hand. Participatory design is our specialty. Working with researchers and stakeholders (be they marginalised groups, patients or the public) we help co-design research, interventions, services, and resources.
We also have the skills to deliver all the multimedia necessary for a research project, from recruiting and engaging stakeholders through to disseminating findings in creative and engaging way ways.

Right now! We love hearing about new projects and we’re always up for a chat.
If you're at the pre-application stage don't worry, we know that things are speculative, but we can help with idea generation, engagement plans, costings and pilot work (if appropriate). We have vast experience in participatory design and co-designing engagement opportunities across the lifespan of a research project and beyond. We even created an app for The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) that helps researchers plan their Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE).
We also regularly deliver presentations and run workshops teaching researchers how to engage stakeholders.
-
We're completely flexible in how we work with researchers and research groups. In the past we have been:
Commissioned: Engaged and Commissioned after an award has been granted.
Partners: Funders often like that were a non-profit organisation that specialises in participatory design and solely focuses on projects with an environmental or social ethos.
Co-investigators: We’ve also been utilised as ‘co-investigators’. Fully involved in project proposals facilitating workshops, interviews, group discussions, creative interventions, and surveys as well as resource and multimedia production. We're also pre-registered on various electronic grant systems (eg. Je-S), have appropriate policies and insurances, and are well-versed in navigating finance systems and protocols.

RESEARCH showcase:
BERRY CELLS
Berry Cells is a project lead by Dr. Marina Freitag (Reader in Energy Materials and a Royal Society University Research Fellow) whose research has seen her develop printable, non-toxic solar cells by harnessing the natural properties of berries! Berry Solar Cells have the potential to replace batteries for certain applications, offering clean, sustainable energy for certain applications, as we strive for a carbon-neutral future. Her work was featured at The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2022.

Plasticus
We worked with marine scientist Dr. Johanna Weston to produce an animation about her involvement in the discovery of a new species of amphipod, Eurythenes Plasticus. This curiously beautiful deep sea dweller takes its name from what the research team found inside its stomach.
The animation was designed as part of an installation at the Great North Museum: Hancock in an effort to help raise awareness of the extent to which plastic pollution is affecting even the deepest, most inaccessible parts of our planet.

Women in mediation
There are three tiers to mediation: local mediators (of which women make up a high proportion), national mediators (with significantly less representation by women at this level) and international mediators (very, very few women at this level). This dramatically reduces the amount of talent at that top level and leaves us asking a pretty dramatic question: Without these barriers would there be less conflict in the world?
Roots and Wings were approached by Dr Catherine Turner, an Associate Professor from Durham Law School who is currently researching the role of women as mediators. We worked with Catherine to highlight these issue and bring them to the attention of the mediation community.

RYVU
Refugee Youth Volunteering Uganda (RYVU) is an international collaborative research project led by a team from universities in the UK and Uganda, in collaboration with international and local NGOs and young refugees themselves.
We worked closely with the RYVU team to produce many of the project outputs, including a project website, a travelling exhibition of photos taken by young refugees themselves, a board game to help portray the day-to-day experiences of young refugees, and a number of publications and policy briefings.
