SUSTAINABILITY.
HERE IN THE NORTH EAST, WE’RE WORKING WITH PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS PUSHING FOR A GREENER FUTURE.
Whether it’s energy researchers working on cutting-edge renewables, or museums looking to inspire young people with a passion for nature, we love working with those who take the climate challenges we face seriously.
Over the last ten years we’ve worked with all manner of organisations in the region to produce engaging multimedia design promoting nature and the possibility of a greener world.

BERRY CELLS
Did you know you can use berries to build solar-powered cells? We didn’t either until we had the pleasure of working with Dr. Marina Freitag and her team at Newcastle University in preparation for their exhibition at The Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition 2022.
Despite being cutting-edge science, Dr Freitag’s berry-powered solar cells are so easy to make a child could do it, and indeed this was one of the activities for young people at the exhibition.
In support of the teams’ work we produced a range of outputs. This included everything from developing Berry Cells branding through to designing merchandise for the exhibition (including the exhibition stand itself), as well as promotional and ‘how to’ videos, and other graphic outputs in support of stimulating public engagement with Dr. Freitag’s work.
NORTH EAST CENTRE FOR ENERGY MATERIALS (NECEM)
NECEM is a collaboration between 3 universities, 35 partners, 27 companies and 12 SMEs. Our role was to showcase their work delivering energy materials research excellence and high-value training. We were also asked to highlight rising global energy demand and how we can hope to meet this demand in the 21st century without further exacerbating the effects of climate change.
The campaign we created positions itself locally by nodding to some of the region’s energy pioneers of yesteryear (Stephenson, Armstrong, Swan) and makes it clear that through partnerships like NECEM and ReNU, the North East can position itself to play a significant role in the development of new, clean energy technologies that will help fuel the green energy revolution we so desperately need.
The core concept we created goes against the tide of equivalent climate change-related videos by delivering a message of hope and instilling a belief that climate action locally can have a global impact.

GREAT NORTH MUSEUM: HANCOCK
To coincide with the arrival of Dippy, the world’s most famous diplodocus skeleton, at the Great North Museum in October 2019, Roots and Wings were asked to produce a series of short videos around the topic of environmental change. Each of the videos covers a different subject matter – sea level rise, energy and emissions, invasive species and extinction – and as such involved filming with environmental scientists and researchers from Newcastle and Durham universities.
Producing these videos seemed especially timely as it coincided with an Extinction Rebellion protests in cities across the UK. Much of what we learned whilst researching and producing these videos was as worrying as you might expect, and we think it’s of prime importance that young people have the opportunity to learn about and engage with these global issues.
The videos remained on display in the Great North Museum after Dippy had left and were also on display at the Natural History Museum where Dippy lives, and we hope these videos can play a role in inspiring the next generation of environmental activists.
